BLOG UPDATE: Organic Oranges Are Better

Thrift store shopping in the Northern Neck

Many of you may not be aware of the many great finds waiting to be discovered at the local thrift stores here in the Northern Neck.  My wife and I try to support those associated with a church or non-profit rather than the smaller private ones that always seem to be over-priced for the selection.  Still, you can’t avoid them as you may find that one perfect item you are looking for.  The proof is in the pudding.  I have been a builder in the Northern Neck for five years and my wife has used these stores to decorate the spec homes I’ve built with great success.  For photos of her work, you can visit www.watermenscove.com.  The two spec units in this subdivision are heavy with furniture finds and accents from many of the local thrift stores in Reedville, Burgess, Kilmarnock, Heathsville, and Callao.  She is famous for taking an old dresser missing one leg, throwing an unmatched leg on it, covering all the legs with a matching nautical rope or skirt, and putting it out as high style in a million dollar waterfront home.  People often ask her where she finds her inspiration and much of it comes from what she can find in these stores.  There is a down side, however.

To avoid adding unnecessary clutter to your house hold, here are some tips:

Start with a plan.  My wife always knows the feel or specific look she is going for and makes sure she stays true to that look when shopping.

Make a deal with yourself to take something out for each item you bring in.

Always haggle.  Don’t try to steal merchandise, but don’t pay more than you would like to for a particular item and remember that most stores make an honest attempt to get the best fair market price for their merchandise.  They survive on sales.  They are often thrilled to learn what an item is actually worth to a buyer, especially if it is close to what they expected to pay.  Good relationships with these merchants is a must if you want to be a successful bargain hunter.  If you plan to design in the Northern Neck, you will need these allies to complete almost any project.

One of the secrets of the Northern Neck is St. Mary’s Thrift Store in Lillian.  From Kilmarnock, head North on 200 and turn right at the light in Burgess towards Reedville.  Bear Right off 360 when it makes the left turn in Lillian and you will see the thrift store on the right hand side.  They typically only keep what they believe will sell and you can find many great items there.  The women will remember frequent shoppers and your discounts will become larger with volume and repetition.  Happy Hunting.
