Sports are Good for Kids
Physical activity is vital in a childs life. Adults' lives as well, but when started at an early age, regular physical activity promotes a healthy body and well-being. Our local YMCA in Northumberland, as well as in Kilmarnock, offer a wide variety of sports and activities for children of all ages to enjoy. My daughter is now a cheerleader. Every Wednesday, the squad meets in Heathsville to practice routines. They put in a ton of energy! Tumbling, flying, base lifting, and just plain cheering, the girls are benefiting from not only the excersize, but also sportsmanship, teamwork and trust. They are learning to be there for each other, and to be disciplined enough to execute the stunts safely, and beautifully. And while this practice is going on, a few of us Cheer Moms have hit the track. I can usually get in a 4 mile walk before practice is over, and I feel great because of it!
My son is on the flag football team. I haven't been to a practice yet, Dad volunteered for that job! I heard that my son scored a touchdown at his first practice! I am so proud! And so is he, and Daddy! Both of these kids get so excited when they realize they are going to practice. I hear them discussing who on their team is good at this, or they themselves are good at that. Participating in these activities is important to them, and important to me. They will benefit from a lifetime's worth of lessons if they keep it up.
Today was Northumberland's Homecoming. I did not attend, due to the storms. But I had looked forward to the game and the parade. I even wore the school colors today!
