Ghosts in the Northern Neck

Upon searching for Halloween decorating ideas and pumpkin carving templates, I discovered some fascinating stories of ghosts in the Northern Neck!  I intend to share a few with you here...

Apparently, in Urbanna, you can stay in a haunted bed n breakfast!  This such place is called the Hewick Mansion, and was built back in 1678 Here, guests have reported hearing sounds of a giggling child when no children are present, and the sweet aroma of pipe tobacco when none of the residents are smoking.

After a couple moved into a home in Matthews County, the wife had eerie experiences that led her to believe there was someone in the room with her at times.  After some time, she saw and identified such being as a young blonde boy.  When she discussed this with the neighbors, they informed her that indeed a child had lived in that house recently, but had died in a terrible car accident.

In Heathsville, an old house built in the 1800's and occupied by the Bliley family, is haunted by an elderly woman.  The family members have many accounts of sightings of this old woman.  Once, her apparition moved down the hallway and into a mural on the wall.

One of the most amazing tales from this area is that of an evil entity which has invaded a mobile home near Callao, in Northumberland County.  Here, there are reports of objects dissappearing and reappearing again, objects floating through the air, and lights turning on when they had been turned off.  The owners of the home felt like they were living in a horror film.  They were convinced that the entity was evil, as they would be scratched by an unseen attacker.  Jets on the gas stove would turn on, filling the house with deadly gas.  They once tried to contact this spirit, in an effort to remove it from their home.  They lit a candle, but as soon as they turned off the light a gust blew out the candle and the table began to tremor violently.  They decided not to talk to the entity after that!  The owner later found out that the day he bought the mobile home was the same day that the previous tenant had died, an elderly woman placed in a nursing home against her will.  Maybe she is not evil.  Just a little grumpy that someone is in her house!

On a friendlier note, Sarah Hayden still haunts her former house, but in a mild manner.  After she had passed away, her neighbors bought the home.  When they went to close on the house, the attorney informed them of a special stipulation in the deed, allowing Sarah a room in the house for as long as she needed it.  Not wanting to make waves with the possible spirit in their new home, the new owners agreed to designate a room for Sarah, just at the top of the stairs.  Often, they would hear definate foot steps going up and down the stairs.  Only, instead of being frightened, they simply called out good night, Sarah as they drifted off to sleep.  Also, the window in Sarah's room would open and close periodically.

These are just a few of the ghost stories our area has to offer.  Hope you enjoyed them!

Happy Halloween!
